Pistol Pete Maravich

This is about one of the greatest Basketball Players of all time.

With a mop of brown hair and his trademark floppy socks, “Pistol Pete” Maravich didn’t necessarily look the part of a court magician. But he was born to play basketball. His between-the-legs dribbles, artistic assists that others could only dream of, and long-distant shooting created a basketball showtime that was as entertaining as it was productive.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Maravich starred at Lousiana State University playing for his dad, Press Maravich. He is still the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points, an average of 44.2 points per game. One analysis shows that Pistol Pete would’ve averaged some 57 points per game if the three point shot had been used during his games.

Stories about some of the practice methods his father used include having Pete dribble the ball outside of the family car window while his father drove the car down the street. It was with this passion for the sport that made him one of the greatest players of all time.

Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, Maravich went on to a strong career in the NBA. He was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Maravich died at the age of 40 from a previously undetected congenital heart defect. He’ll long be remembered for the way he played the game.
