How to handle stress

Intelligent words of advice.

A young psychology professor was confidently walking around the stage explaining stress management to an audience, with a raised glass of water. And everyone knew she was going to ask the typical question… ‘is this glass half empty or half full?’ Well, she fooled them… “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?” she inquired with a smile.

Answers were called out to her ranging from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “From my perspective, the absolute weight of the glass doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have a pretty good ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor.  In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “That’s the way it is with stress and worries. Think about them for a while and nothing much happens.  Think about them a good bit longer and you begin to ache a little.  But, if you think about them all day long, you’ll feel numb and paralyzed – incapable of doing anything else… until you drop them.”

Then she summed it all up… “As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden – holding stress longer and better each time we practice.”

MORAL: Remember to let go of your stresses and worries.

No matter what happens during the day, as early in the evening as you can, put your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the night and into the next day. Pick them up tomorrow.

If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, that’s a signal to “put the glass down.” Relax… and pick it up again later after you’re rested.

Ponder and Relax

• Accept the fact that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue!

• Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

• Drive carefully… It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.

• If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

• If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

• Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

• Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.

• Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

• You may only be one person in the world, but you may also be ‘the world’ to one person.

• A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

• Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today.

Save the earth… It’s the only planet with chocolate!
